February 28, 2023Cinnamon is a spice that comes from the inner bark of various species of plants within the cinnamomum genus. It is used in sweet and savory foods, as well as in cosmetics and medicine. The name "cinnamon" is derived from its light brown color. True Cinnamon is a unique spice that originates from Sri Lanka and has been in use for centuries.
According to ancient beliefs, cinnamon was highly valued and considered a suitable gift for royalty and the gods. It is said that cinnamon and cassia were presented as gifts to the hermitages of Apollo and Miletus. Cinnamon was previously supplied by Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, and Burma, but in the present day, Vietnam, China, Seychelles, and Madagascar have also joined the industry. Sri Lanka produces 80% - 90% of the world's supply of cinnamon, specifically true cinnamon.
True Cinnamon is the most popular type of cinnamon worldwide and results in approximately 18,700 tons per year in exports. The vast majority of cinnamon exports are dried and processed cinnamon, exported as quills. Cinnamon quills are prepared by scraping the inner bark from mature cinnamon plantations and separating them into jointed sticks. These sticks are then filled with small pieces of the same type of cinnamon and dried. The most commonly exported cinnamon products are cinnamon bales made from these whole cinnamon sticks.
